Astrid has a best friend named Nicole. They do everything together.  Every Friday night Astrid’s mom takes them somewhere different.  On this particular Friday Astrid’s mom takes them to a rink.  The girls don't know what it is for until all the lights go off except for one.

Then someone standing in the spotlight says welcome to roller derby.  Once Astrid sees them play she falls in love with the game. She begs her mom to take her to the junior skate team.

Astrid goes to Roller Derby camp and Nicole goes to dance camp.  Nicole stops talking to Astrid, she is now hanging out with Astrid’s enemy Rachel.  No more Friday nights together.  She misses her time with her friend.

Astrid is nervous about her first day at practice.  Practice is harder than she thought and she isn't very good at it. She's not sure why she signed up at all.

Will she get better at roller derby? Can she save her friendship with Nicole?

Opinion:

I am a fan of graphic novels and this one was absolutely fantastic.  In particular I liked having the chance to read about roller derby.  I didn't know what roller derby was and now I am thinking I might even want to try it myself.  I could understand Astrid when she and Nicole had problems.  She is upset that Nicole chose Rachel over her.  If you liked "Smile" and "Sisters" you will like this book as well because like those books are graphic novels about a character going through hard times.  Readers should know that there is a bit of bullying. Nicole teases Astrid about her name.  There are a lot of middle school friendship problems.  I really liked this book and would recommend it to realistic fiction readers and graphic novel readers.
