The Originals by Julie Plec is a story about three vampires named Niklaus, Klaus for short, Elijah, and Rebekah Mikaelson. These three aren't just your average run of the mill vampires however, they are the original family. This means that they are immensely hard to kill and they are the most powerful of their race. They have just made the journey to the New World from Europe and landed in the port city of New Orleans. Their goal is to make New Orleans a home for themselves, hoping to blend in with and join the alliance between the witches and werewolves already living there. The three originals had been running for centuries from their father, a vampire who hunts vampires. By coming to New Orleans, they hope to escape him, however things take a bad turn when Klaus falls in love with someone forbidden to him and Rebekah finds herself attracted to a man with a dark secret. With the fragile alliance now broken, who will come out alive?

Opinion:

The Originals was a fantastic story. My attention was held the entire time I was reading and I felt a connection to each of the characters. Plec did a great job explaining the characters backgrounds and personalities, so I could fully understand their actions and decisions. This book actually got me hooked on the TV show The Vampire Diaries (little embarrassing fact seeing as I am a 16 year old guy) and now I am excited to start watching the show based off this book. The whole concept of the story was very interesting and I was glad to have more knowledge about some of the more prominent characters in The Vampire Diaries. I enjoyed how she mixed action, romance, and drama into one book. I would definitely recommend this to a wide array of readers. I can't wait for the next one to come out.
