In the book, Maximum Ride: The Angel Experiment, the six main protagonists all have at least one thing in common: they can fly. Max, Fang, Nudge, Iggy, the Gasman, and Angel, who live by themselves in the middle of nowhere, are ninety-eight percent human and two percent bird. Before the events that occur in the story, Max and her family all escaped the clutches of the School, an institution where "scientists" perform sadistic tests on their subjects.

Max and her friends, who she considers family, are living isolated in mountains near by California. They are up there for a big reason. They are mutants from a lab-testing area called "school". The school wants to get them back in their hands for more experiments. Max and her family look normal, besides their huge wings that they fly with. Also, some of her family members have special abilities, like reading minds. One day up in the mountains, the school's worker mutants, who are called erasers, and are half wolf and man, take Angel, the youngest of the family, away.
